Transportation Enhancement Project - Birmingham, AL
Veterans Construction is proud to be a part of the Sain Associate
team for this 2016 ACEC Alabama Engineering Excellence Award
Competition and State award.
This project started with a vision of providing pedestrian and
bicycle accommodations along the corridor while enhancing and
beautifying it. The Sain team was able to do this by reducing the
pavement width (typically called a 'road diet') to add sidewalks and
a bicycle accommodation, adding landscaping and lighting and
maintain as much of the exciting tree canopy as possible.
We also improved the Zoo entrance to provide a grander gateway entry
point. This allowed pedestrian movement between the Gardens
The final product is a big improvement aesthetically. Joggers and
pedestrians are enjoying wide sidewalks underneath a beautiful tree
canopy, and thy can walk safety between Mountain Brook Village and
English Village. "This project connects two great partnership
between the City of Birmingham, Friends of Birmingham Botanical
Gardens and the Birmingham Zoo. Working closely together, we are
continuing to make the City of Birmingham better for all at its
residents and for all of our visitors." Mayor Bell of Birmingham -
